Foundation for Tri-State Community Announces Recipients of
Ashland Inc. Donor Advised Fund
ASHLAND (06/12/2007) - $75,000 is being distributed to 31 tri-state charitable organizations by the Ashland Inc. Donor Advised Fund of the Foundation for the Tri-State Community, Inc., Mary Witten Wiseman, the foundation’s president, announced today.
In the eight years since the formation of the Ashland Donor Advised Fund, more than $2,526,600 has been given to improve the quality of life in the area, Wiseman said.
“The Ashland Inc. Donor Advised Fund is an excellent example of how a corporation and its employees can make a difference in a community,” Wiseman said. “The donor advised fund, again this year, will support a variety of organizations across the tri-state.”
Every recipient has important uses for the funds and has a story to tell about how it will use the money, according to Wiseman.
“This is an important contribution to the Jesse Stuart Foundation,” according to Dr. Jim Gifford, the foundation’s chief executive officer and senior editor. “The money received will help us reprint Harry Caudill’s Night Comes to the Cumberlands. It will make a big difference to our foundation’s operations.”
Patti Price, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tri-State, says the money it is receiving will support the organization’s school-based mentoring program. “Our school program puts a volunteer together with a student for one hour each week during the school year,” Price says. “The donation helps us with the costs associated with recruiting, screening, matching and training of volunteers, as well as with background checks and materials. We have a waiting list of children who want mentors, so recruiting more volunteers is very important.”
CAReS, in Ashland, identifies, coordinates and mobilizes needed services and materials for those in emergency or crisis situations, according to Lesli Moore, its executive director. “Without this, we wouldn’t be able to fund important programs. We’re helping with rental assistance, utility assistance, emergency food needs – even household cleaners and diapers.”
According to Ann Bryan, a member of the Catlettsburg Leadership Community Development Club and co-chair of the Catlettsburg Lock Mural Project, the grant her organization received is an important contribution to its plans to add three murals this year. “The murals on the flood wall in Catlettsburg are costly, but they have generated much positive publicity for the city and built a degree of self-esteem in our community,” said Bryan. “We’re excited to see the project continue and hope other organizations, businesses and individuals will help us with our efforts.” For more information, contact Bryan at (606) 465-7123.
