Awards Grants to Four
Aug. 25, 2008
ASHLAND, Ky. - Four Greenup County organizations are sharing the Greenup County Green Fund award this year, according to Mary Witten Wiseman, president of the Foundation for the Tri-State Community, Inc.
Each year, the Greenup County Green Fund awards organizations that conduct projects that will enhance the county’s natural beauty.
Wiseman said awards have been made to Argillite Elementary School, the City of Raceland, the Greenup County Conservation District and the Kiwanis Club of East Greenup Co., KY, Inc. “These organizations provided excellent applications and we look forward to the completion of these projects that should make Greenup County even more attractive,” said Wiseman.
Argillite Elementary will conduct a project it has titled “Learning Naturally - Butterfly Benches/Weather Station.” It will create a peaceful and attractive outdoor classroom where students can observe the habitat and daily life of butterflies, as well as learn about weather through scientific instruments concealed among the natural plantings.
The City of Raceland will use its award to implement Phase II of its Raceland Historical Tour & Beautification Project. The project will continue to improve the appearance of the old Raceland/Chinnville Business District and enhance the natural beauty of the area.
The Kiwanis Club of East Greenup County will use its award to help fund its Gilley Log House Native Landscape project. The project will enhance Bobby Crager Park in Flatwoods, Ky., by assisting in the landscaping of the historic Gilley Log House with plants native to the area when the home was originally constructed in the 1840s, as well as providing attractive plants in front of the amphitheater located at the other end of the park.
The Greenup County Conservation District’s award will be used for its tree seedling giveaway project, which will replace trees in the county that were damaged in the 2003 ice storm.
The Greenup County Green Fund is one of the funds of the Foundation for the Tri-State Community. The foundation is the oldest community foundation in the area.
