21st CENTURY ENDOWMENT FUND 2007 GRANTS FOUNDATION FOR THE TRI-STATE COMMUNITY, INC.

FIRST QUARTER FUNDING CYCLE

ASHLAND YOUTH BALLET Kentucky/Ohio $1,500
Our Stories Through Movement
This grant helped to fund the Ashland Youth Ballet’s presentation of ANDARYdance at the Paramount Arts Center. Mr. Andary also worked with local elementary schools to provide lecture/demonstration opportunities.

MARSHALL UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION West Virginia $2,500
Transportation Library & Research Center Concept Paper
This grant enabled MU to hire a consultant to prepare a concept paper for the creation and development of a transportation reference library and research center.

TRI-STATE AREA COUNCIL, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA Tri-State  $2,000
Scouting For Food Campaign
The purpose of this project is twofold:  (1) cans of food are gathered for distribution to area food banks; (2) it teaches the scouts how to, and the importance of, giving back to their communities. This grant purchased the plastic bags that will be given to area residents for their canned food contribution.

SECOND QUARTER FUNDING CYCLE

ARTS COUNCIL OF NORTHEASTERN KENTUCKY, INC. Kentucky $1,600
Melodies & masterpieces plus – evenings on first Fridays
This grant helped to fund evening musical performances in conjunction with Ashland’s First Fridays in June, July, and August.  The performances, from 5 to 7 pm on Judd Plaza, featured local musicians and artists for the enjoyment of area visitors. The goal of this project was to add to the attractiveness of Ashland’s downtown area and to bring additional visitors.

HUNTINGTON LITTLE LEAGUE No. 3 West Virginia $4,500
Build the ballpark, better the community, save league 3

This grant funded handicap accessibility at two new baseball fields in Huntington. School consolidation at Cammack Elementary and Middle has resulted in the loss of the sports complex that has served League No. 3 since 1951. The new facility will not only allow League 3 to continue, but also to expand its services to include over 1,000 children from the Huntington Boys & Girls Clubs and to offer the Tri-State’s first Challenger division, a program to provide baseball, t-ball, and softball for children with disabilities.

JUNIOR LEAGUE RITTER PARK ISLAND PLAYGROUND FUND OF THE FOUNDATION FOR THE TRI STATE COMMUNITY, INC. West Virginia $4,500
Junior League Ritter Park Island Playground Fund
This grant funded handicap accessibility in a new playground at Huntington’s Ritter Park.  A key element of this playground’s design is that children of all physical abilities can play together in the same space. Known as universal design, this principle strives to create spaces that all users can enjoy—not necessarily creating specific spaces for physically disabled users.  In universally accessible spaces, social interaction can easily occur and users are not constantly reminded of physical limitations.

MISSION WEST VIRGINIA. West Virginia $1,101
Delivering Hope
This grant purchased equipment for the Operation Sharing warehouse at Mission West Virginia. Mission West Virginia provides free supplies to non-profit organizations throughout West Virginia and the Tri-State area. The equipment—a strapping machine, fork extension, and two-panel hand truck—will help the organization to function more efficiently and to comply with OSHA guidelines.

SAFE HARBOR OF NORTHEAST KY. Kentucky $3,000
Safe Harbor Landscape, Garden, Playground
This grant helped to provide privacy fencing at a domestic violence shelter so its residents can enjoy the outdoors without jeopardizing their anonymity.

THIRD QUARTER FUNDING CYCLE

BOYD COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS. Kentucky $1,500
Community Commission
This grant assisted the band boosters in their collaboration with world-renowned composer James Curnow.  He wrote a new piece of music that will be premiered by the Boyd County High School Band.  This special collaboration gave students the opportunity to meet with a recognized composer and insight on how a composition is born ... from first thought through the completed written piece. Funded, in part, by the Boyd County Fund.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS RIVER CITIES Tri-State $1,500
Suiting Program – Seed Money
This grant enabled Dress for Success River Cities to purchase hose, shoes and slips for their Suiting Program. The goal of the Suiting Program is to provide clients with an interview suit and accessories (including suit, handbag, padfolio, conservative jewelry) as well as a confidence boost.

PARAMOUNT ARTS CENTER Kentucky $3,758
PAC Piano Repair
This grant funded repairs and updates to PAC’s Baldwin Concert Grand Piano.  Funded, in part, by The Chellgren Fund.

ST. MARY’S MEDICAL CENTER FOUNDATION. West Virginia $3,000
Vital Simulation Laboratory
This grant funded mannequins for the Vital Simulation Laboratory at the new St. Mary’s Center for Education. These state-of-the-art patient simulators will afford students the opportunity to practice their medical and diagnostic skills and increase their critical decision making skills before working in a clinical setting.

HUNTINGTON CITY MISSION. West Virginia $2,000
Project Hope Community Room
New furniture for the Project Hope Community Room was purchased with this grant. Project Hope is an 18-apartment complex transitional living facility and is the only transitional living facility in the state of West Virginia. Funded, in part, by the West Virginia Neighborhood Investment Program Endowment Fund.

FOURTH QUARTER FUNDING CYCLE

CABELL HUNTINGTON HOSPITAL. West Virginia $1,000
Elder Activities Cart
This grant assisted the hospital in purchasing an activity cart and supplies for the Senior Services Department. The activity cart will be taken throughout the hospital to provide activities for any senior patient who wishes to participate.  Items purchased included  games, movies, CDs, audio books and crafts.

HIGHLANDS MUSEUM & DISCOVERY CENTER Kentucky $2,000
Digging Deeper
This grant helped fund the re-design of the archeology exhibit, focusing on the broad story of who and what lived in this region prior to the European explorers and settlers.

RIVER CITIES HARVEST. Kentucky $1,250
It’s All About The Food
A laptop computer was purchased with this grant. The computer will enable River Cities Harvest to make presentations to potential donors and recipients regarding its services.

RIVER VALLEY CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER West Virginia $550
Playground Licensing Requirments
This grant allowed the Center to install an additional gate in the rear of the playground area. The gate addition was necessary for safety reasons, allowing the children to safely exit the playground area in case of emergency.  Funded, in part, by the West Virginia Neighborhood Investment Program Endowment Fund.

UNITED WAY OF THE RIVER CITIES. Ohio $1,800
Earned Income Tax Credit Project
This grant enabled the United Way to extend its Earned Income Tax Credit Project into Lawrence County, Ohio. The grant funded the purchase of a laptop computer and printer.

WEST VIRGINIA LOCAL HEALTH, INC. West Virginia $1,000
WalkITUp!
This grant assisted in the media campaign to promote the WalkItUp! program in Cabell and Wayne Counties. The six-week program began on April 5, 2008, and concluded on  May 17, 2008.
