21st CENTURY ENDOWMENT FUND 2006 GRANTS FOUNDATION FOR THE TRI-STATE COMMUNITY, INC.

HOPE’S PLACE Kentucky  $2,000
Shared Forensic Interviewer
This grant paid for the specialized training for one employee to become a forensic interviewer.  This interviewer will be a shared employee between Hope’s Place and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. In addition, this grant aided in the purchase of a computer and software. 

STELLA FULLER SETTLEMENT West Virginia   $3,600
Area Improvements
This grant enabled Stella Fuller to make much needed improvements to their clothing and food distribution areas buy purchasing shelving, tables, clothing racks, and two freezers. Materials for window repair were also purchased.

TRI-STATE BASEBALL ASSOCIATION, INC. Tri-State   $2,000
Huntington Hounds
This grant purchased uniforms for the Huntington Hounds, which is a summer league baseball team for area high school players.  Participation in the Huntington Hounds increases the players’ exposure to college scouts, which is necessary if they are to be considered for scholarships.

PRESTERA FOUNDATION West Virginia  $2,000
Homeless Mental Health Consumers
This grant assisted the Prestera Foundation in bringing the producers of the film West 47th Street, a documentary chronicling the lives of four people recovering from mental illness, to Huntington to facilitate a discussion on mental illness following the film’s viewing.

ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION HUNTINGTON VOLUNTEER OFFICE Tri-State $950
Arthritis self-help program leader training
This grant funded the participant training materials (notebooks) and honorarium for the trainer for the Arthritis Foundation’s updated Self-Help program.  This program will train 15 leaders throughout our service area, who will return to their communities to conduct the 6-week self-help workshops, which help persons with arthritis manage their life changing disease through stress management, exercise, physician interaction, change of habits and nutrition.

THIRD QUARTER FUNDING CYCLE

CHILDWATCH, CASA OF BOYD COUNTY Kentucky $3,000
Essential technology
This grant aided CASA’s expansion into Greenup County by providing office set-up materials for the new office. Items included a digital camera, printer, telephone, fax machine, copier, shredder, and software.

HUNTINGTON MUSEUM OF ART West Virginia $4,500
Accessible Trail and Butterfly Garden
This grant assisted the museum in the construction of a destination spot that incorporates an accessible sensory trail for the visually and physically impaired with a butterfly garden. The trail will be incorporated into the Museum’s existing primitive trail system.

OHIO UNIVERSITY, SOUTHERN CAMPUS Ohio  $475
History ALive: Meet The Generals
This grant helped to provide funding to bring historical character interpreters of General Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee to Ohio University Southern Campus for a presentation in November 2006

FOURTH QUARTER FUNDING CYCLE

BACKSTAGE PLAYERS Tri-State  $3,100
Disney’s High School Musical
This grant helped to fund the Backstage Players’ production of Disney’s High School Musical. The project involved individuals from all three states and utilized three distinct art forms (dance, music and theatre) together in one production. 

CABELL-WAYNE ASSOCIATION OF THE BLIND West Virginia  $2,000
Boundless Opportunities
This grant assisted the Association in the construction of accessible restrooms, which are located adjacent to a new pavilion that is being built directly behind their service center. The new area will accommodate activities for their consumers and will be available for use by other organizations.

GENOA COMMUNITY CENTER West Virginia $1,500
Personal Care Products
This grant enabled the Center to provide personal care products that are not usually available through food banks or Food Stamp purchases. Items to be provided include soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, dental floss, laundry supplies, vitamins, feminine hygiene products, baby soaps and shampoos, diapers, baby wipes, powders, diaper rash ointments, baby lotions and oils.

HUNTINGTON AREA FOOD BANK Tri-State  $4,000
HAFB Food Purchasing Program
This grant assisted the Food Bank in developing a food purchasing program, which will enable them to acquire more nutritious food items that will aid in the development and healthy living of Tri-State residents.  The Food Bank serves 17 counties, including all 5 counties in the Foundation’s service area. 

THE JESSE STUART FOUNDATION Kentucky $4,500
Fire and Security System
This grant aided in the purchase and installation of a new fire and security system to better protect the JSF’s books, original art and prints.

MARSHALL UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE West Virginia $4,500
Let’s Get Moving Project
This project addresses the growing nationwide problem of obesity by bringing health fairs to all 20 Cabell County elementary schools for the 5th graders between October 2006 and May 2007.  The fairs will include 4 activity stations, a nutrition station and blood pressure and body mass index station.  The stations will be staffed by medical students and residents from Marshall University.

NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY, OH VALLEY CHAPTER
Ohio/West Virginia $2,900
MSercise Program
This grant provided scholarships for individuals affected by MS to attend a new exercise program being developed in cooperation with the Huntington YMCA.  This pilot program is intended to provide a secure environment for those individuals with MS to participate in a fitness program.
